Deeper Concepts: The Consciousness Behind It All
A note before you begin
Everything so far rests on a single idea: that you were a conscious being before you were born, shaped by the conditions around you. This page goes deeper into that consciousness — what the tradition understands it to be, and how it works. It isn't needed to understand your report, but it enriches the picture for those who want it.
Your inner being (Uxlab)
The Uxlab is your inner being — your first consciousness, and the core of who you are. The word is tied to the breath itself, to the rhythm of inhaling and exhaling that marks a life. According to this tradition your inner being is awake from the moment of conception: not a passive thing waiting to switch on at birth, but an active, perceiving presence. In the womb it can sense and respond to its surroundings, feel its mother's emotions, communicate through movement, and even carry memory of that time.
You might think of it as your original operating system — the deep layer beneath conscious thought, much like what modern thinking calls the subconscious. It is not one of your two forces; it is the being those two nawals shape. The Maya also held that the inner being is renewable — it can be nourished and restored, not merely spent.
Its two properties
The inner being works in two directions at once — it radiates outward, and it perceives inward.
K'uxlaxik — heart-centered consciousness. K'ux means heart, essence, core. This is a quiet, intuitive, creative way of knowing — not analysis or comparison, but a deep, almost meditative sense of things. It is the inner being radiating outward.
Na'oj — environmental sensitivity. This is the capacity to feel and respond to what surrounds you, taking in the world through perception itself. In the womb, it is how the baby experiences its mother's states so directly. (A nawal carries a closely related name — No'j; they are different things. Here, Na'oj is a way the inner being perceives.)
The Chajinel — the guardian of the mind
Between the world and your inner being sits the Chajinel — a guardian that filters what reaches you, deciding what passes through to your core and what does not. It is a useful protector. But it was never meant to work without rest, and in the modern world — flooded with information — it can become overworked and exhausted, an anxious gatekeeper convinced it must manage everything.
The teaching of the Chajinel is one of balance: honor the thinking mind, but also trust the quieter knowing of your inner being. Some things are understood not by analysis but by a deeper sense — and when the guardian relents, that intuitive understanding can come through directly, making sense without being picked apart.
A note on gender
There is a further layer the foundation report does not separate out — and naming it here is meant to add depth, not to suggest the report leaves anything out. It works in two ways.
First, in the womb: whether the baby is a girl or a boy shapes how it takes in the atmosphere it forms through. The mother is still the channel, and the conditions are still the conditions — but they are absorbed a little differently, and that adds a quiet dimension beneath everything the report describes.
Second, in how a sign shows in a life: the same nawal can read differently in a woman than in a man. A masculine sign carried by a woman tends to stand out — others notice its force more readily. A feminine sign carried by a man tends to soften him, and that too draws notice, often more than the same feminine sign would in a woman. The pattern itself is unchanged; what shifts is how visibly it reads from the outside.
None of this makes your report any less true. It is simply a deeper reading than the foundation sets out to give — a layer worth knowing is there.
Why this matters
These ideas explain why experiences from before birth can shape us so deeply: your inner being was already there, already perceiving. They also say something about how this knowledge is best received — often not by arguing with it, but by recognizing it, letting it land where the quieter knowing lives. That is exactly the spirit in which to read your report.
