The Larger System: The Forces Beyond Your Day Sign

More than a single point

Your conception, your gestation, and your birth form your foundation — the constant impulse and the personality you carry. But you are not a single point. Your day sign sits within a larger system of forces, and those forces are what give a life its movement: its rhythms, its seasons, its ups and downs. Understanding them is the work of the Extra Influences readings, which build on the foundation. This page introduces what they are.

You are a council of forces

In this tradition, a person is not shaped by one nawal alone. We are composed of several. The day you were born into leads — the Maya call it the K'amal B'e, the "guide of the path": the force that leads your decisions through life. Around it stands a council of nawals — the Ch'ob'oj — each with its own voice, influencing the leader: pushing, pulling, and giving dynamics. These are separate from the nawals of the trecena. It is why you are more than your single day sign: your day sign leads, but it does not stand alone.

The Pregnancy Condition report reads the leader of this council — your day sign — and summarizes the most important of what the council as a whole carries. It is written to give you what matters most. But the council holds more: the meeting of several forces creates countless possibilities of small nuances, more than any written format can carry. For those who want the complete picture of themselves, these nuances can be explored in private consultations, where there is room for what no written report can hold.

The trecena — the wave your day rides

Each day in the sacred calendar belongs to a thirteen-day period called a trecena — a wave that begins, builds, and completes across its thirteen steps. Every step in that rhythm has a character of its own: a place of beginning, of gathering, of turning, of culmination. In fact, the number you carry is your step in this rhythm — which is why your number is never just a quantity, but a position with a character all its own.

The trecena you were born into also carries an overall theme, and that theme colors all thirteen of its days, yours included. So two things are at work: your own step in the wave — your number, which your report already reads — and the larger wave you belong to, whose theme is one of the layers the Extra Influences open up.

The Mam — the elder of the year

The Mam — meaning "grandfather" or "elder" — is the calendar of the solar year. Among the twenty nominal nawals, four are Elders of the Mam — Kej, E, No'j, and Iq'. Each Elder combines with the thirteen numbers, giving thirteen variations of every Elder — fifty-two in total. The same Mam returns once every fifty-two years, and in the Maya lands this is why turning fifty-two marks becoming an elder: you have lived through the complete cycle.

Every Mam also belongs to its own trecena — and it carries that trecena's strongest expression and its end meaning: what that trecena, at its fullest, wants to accomplish.

How the forces combine — the movement of a life

Your foundation tells you who you were formed to be. The larger forces tell you how that nature moves through time. Several forces act on you at once, and they combine to create movement — the rises and the falls, the seasons when everything flows and the seasons when it feels heavy. And because everything in this worldview is interconnected, the forces do not act in isolation: when one of them turns cold, it does not turn alone — it pulls the whole system around it. Seeing how these forces interact is what makes sense of the rhythm behind your highs and lows.

What draws us to others

These forces shape more than your own rhythm — they also shape who you are drawn to. The signs are, in a sense, in conversation with one another: we tend to look for those who complete us, who carry what we lack. And some signs simply fascinate us — they catch the eye in a way that isn't always easy to explain, a kind of pull the tradition knows well. What sparks that interest depends on a great deal at once — the meeting of two people's nawals, where each sits in their trecena, the Mam, and more — so reading two people together is a rich study of its own, and one for the future.

For now, a simple invitation: begin to notice what kinds of people you are drawn to, and what it is in them that pulls you. That noticing is the doorway to all of it.

Why the foundation comes first

This is why the Pregnancy Condition report is the foundation — it describes the nature that everything else moves through. The Extra Influences readings build on it, adding the forces that explain the movement and the patterns of your life. They are released over time, one at a time, and the foundation is where everyone begins.
